The “Whites” i.e. Grosia (piastre)

June 20, 2013 @ MoC

The way nations speak color throughout their history changes from time to time and idioms are a precious treasury of insight into the life and practices of folk people. E.g. During Turkish rule in Greece the currency used was “grosia” (piastre) referred to as “whites” in everyday life. Popular idioms of that era are: “Whites in purse, fish on the mountain”, “Whites talk, whites speak, whites discuss”, “Give me whites and I will take you to the stars”. (All these idioms come with rhyme in Archaic Greek).
