Burmese Nuns

“Burma’s the only country I’ve seen the nuns wear these colors – usually they wear white. The monks from India across to Indochina wear variations of saffron, ochre, burgundy, depending on country & …sect. Legend has it that this began with the Buddha, who wore cast-offs which he dyed with a variety of roots, barks, etc, resulting in an earth-colored melange. It was a very unfashionable color at the time – & symbolised rejection of society’s values. But, again, Burma is the only place I’ve seen renunciates of either sex wear red or pink -which I rather like (John Macgregor).

And a groovy Burmese monk (Northern Burma)
